Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke rehabilitation is the process of recovery and therapy following a stroke, aimed at helping individuals regain as much function and independence as possible. It involves a combination of medical treatment, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and supportive care.

Types
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation: Intensive therapy provided in a hospital or specialized rehabilitation center.
  • Outpatient Rehabilitation: Therapy sessions conducted at a hospital or clinic while the patient lives at home.
  • Home-Based Rehabilitation: Therapy provided in the patient’s home.
  • Community Rehabilitation: Services and support available within the community, such as day programs or support groups.
Symptoms
  • Motor Impairments: Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty with coordination and balance.
  • Speech and Language Issues: Difficulty speaking, understanding speech, reading, or writing (aphasia).
  • Cognitive Impairments: Problems with memory, attention, problem-solving, and executive function.
  • Sensory Issues: Numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation in affected areas.
  • Emotional Changes: Depression, anxiety, mood swings, and changes in personality.
Causes
  • Ischemic Stroke: Caused by a blockage in an artery supplying blood to the brain.
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by bleeding in or around the brain.
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): A temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain, often called a mini-stroke.
  • Risk Factors: High blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle.

  • Reduced Independence: Difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Mobility Issues: Increased risk of falls and difficulty moving around the home or community.
