Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does produce, leading to high blood sugar levels. Over time, uncontrolled diabetes can cause serious health problems, including heart disease, kidney failure, and nerve damage.

Types
  • Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is less common in older adults.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin. This type is prevalent in older adults.
  • Gestational Diabetes: A temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy and increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
  • Prediabetes: A condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes.
Symptoms
  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
  • Unexplained weight loss (more common in type 1 diabetes)
  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
Causes
  • Type 1 Diabetes:
    • Autoimmune response
    • Genetic factors
  • Type 2 Diabetes:
    • Genetic predisposition
    • Overweight and obesity
    • Physical inactivity
    • Poor diet
    • Age-related changes in metabolism and insulin sensitivity
Impact To Lifestyle
  • Daily Management: Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, adherence to medication, and lifestyle changes.
  • Dietary Adjustments: Following a balanced diet and managing carbohydrate intake.
  • Physical Activity: Incorporating regular physical activity to help control blood sugar levels and maintain overall health.
  • Healthcare Visits: Increased need for medical appointments to monitor and manage the condition.
  • Complications: Risk of developing complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, eye problems, and neuropathy, which can affect mobility and quality of life.
  • Emotional Health: Managing a chronic condition can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression.
Management & Prevention

Management:

  • Medication: Oral medications, insulin therapy, and other injectable medications to control blood sugar levels.
  • Blood Sugar Monitoring: Regular checks to ensure blood sugar levels are within the target range.
  • Diet: Following a diabetes-friendly diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting sugars and refined carbs.
  • Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, such as walking, swimming, or strength training, to help control blood sugar and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Education and Support: Participating in diabetes education programs and support groups to learn management strategies and connect with others.

Prevention:

  • Healthy Eating: Maintaining a balanced diet with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Weight Management: Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Regular Health Check-Ups: Monitoring blood sugar levels and other health markers to catch prediabetes or diabetes early.
  • Avoid Smoking: Quitting smoking to improve overall health and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
  • Limit Alcohol: Drinking alcohol in moderation, if at all, as excessive consumption can affect blood sugar levels.
