Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease characterized by airflow obstruction that makes it difficult to breathe. It includes conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD primarily affects older adults and significantly impacts their quality of life and independence.

Types
  • Emphysema: Damage to the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, leading to breathlessness.
  • Chronic Bronchitis: Long-term inflammation of the bronchial tubes, resulting in mucus production and a chronic cough.
Symptoms
  • Shortness of Breath: Especially during physical activities.
  • Chronic Cough: Often with mucus production.
  • Wheezing: A whistling sound when breathing.
  • Chest Tightness: Discomfort or pain in the chest.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness due to decreased oxygen levels.
Causes
  • Smoking: The leading cause of COPD, accounting for the majority of cases.
  • Environmental Factors: Long-term exposure to air pollutants, chemical fumes, and dust.
  • Genetics: A rare genetic disorder called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency can cause COPD.
  • Age: COPD is more common in people over the age of 40.
Impact To Lifestyle
  • Reduced Independence: Difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and cooking.
  • Limited Mobility: Breathlessness can restrict physical activities and lead to a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Frequent Infections: Increased susceptibility to respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
  • Emotional Health: Anxiety, depression, and social isolation due to breathing difficulties.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Breathing problems can disrupt sleep and lead to fatigue
Management & Prevention
  • Smoking Cessation: Quitting smoking is the most important step to slow the progression of COPD.
  • Medications: Bronchodilators, inhaled steroids, and other medications to open airways and reduce inflammation.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Exercise programs, education, and support to improve lung function and overall health.
  • Oxygen Therapy: Supplemental oxygen for those with severe COPD and low blood oxygen levels.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding lung irritants.
  • Vaccinations: Annual flu shots and pneumococcal vaccines to prevent infections.
  • Breathing Techniques: Learning techniques such as pursed-lip breathing to ease shortness of breath.
  • Support Groups: Connecting with others who have COPD for emotional and practical support.
  • Home Modifications: Adapting the living environment to make breathing easier, such as using air purifiers.
  • Regular Check-Ups: Monitoring lung function and adjusting treatment as needed.
